ASTRA VERNICI: THE BUFFING SPECIALIST
It is certainly not by chance that our company, established in 1951 as wood coatings producer, is also involved in buffing products..
In fact, who better than the paint manufacturer knows the issues of coatings and how to solve them in combination with the best polishing products?
This is why ASTRA VERNICI S.r.l. it is universally recognized as a privileged experienced partner as far as buffing & polishing concerns.
Thanks to an effective range of abrasive-polishing compounds and with the support of many years of experience we are able to find the right solutions for all the needs in polishings.
Our production includes:
- SOLID BUFFING PASTE (in sticks) for automatic or manual polishing machines
- BUFFING COMPOUNDS (semi liquid kind) (also called abrasive waxes) for automatic or manual polishing machines
- POLISH (in liquid form) for final touch
- ADDITIVE / REDUCER for the dilution and for moistening the rollers
BRIEF NOTIONS ABOUT THE BUFFING PROCEDURE
PERFORMANCES OF THE FILM OF THE PAINT
A very good hardness of the film layer is the basic requirement for a successful polishing.
In fact, if the paint film is not hard enough, during polishing process it will tend to be removed due to the heat generated by the friction of the rollers.
The surface of the film will then show signs of removal and consequently a lack of brilliance, less glossiness.
The hardness of the film changes according to the type and characteristics of the paint itself and, in the pigmented coatings, it also depends on the hue of the color.
QUALITY OF SANDING
The finer the grain of the abrasive paper, the better will be the final result after buffing.
Suggested abrasive papers: :
- Waxed polyester (paraffined polyester) films: start with coarse-grained abrasive paper (320), proceed with finer papers up to 600-80 0.
- Poliurethane films: start with medium-fine grain abrasive paper (600) and proceed in sequence with very fine papers (1200-1500).
In case of automatic buffing machines, the final sanding must be performed perpendicular to the last sanding to avoid marks.
- Acrylic films: start with fine grain abrasive paper (800) and proceed in sequence with very fine papers (1500).
It is always recommended to sand in a crosswise direction.
In case of automatic buffing machines, the final sanding must be performed perpendicular to the last sanding to avoid marks..
PRESSURE OF THE ROLLS ON THE FILM
The operating temperature (due to the friction of the rollers) must be constantly checked out and maintained in optimal values (between 25 °C (77 °F) and 40 °C (104 °F) .Higher temperatures could alter the distension of the paint film with loss of specularity.
The roller felts shall never be dry but damp and impregnated with abrasive paste to avoid scratches on the film. We suggest to use flannel or soft cotton rollers. To keep the rollers soft during prolonged breaks (or weekends) it is advisable to wet them with our emollient liquid ADDITIVE W/CC
FOAMED PADS FOR HAND BUFFING
On the market there are several padsfor roto-orbital polishing machines. The lamb wool pads a good for their cutting force and are to used in the first step of th ebuffing process, while the polyurethane foamed pads (the softer ones, usually in a dark color) have to be used in the final polishing step.
